Operation www.ti.com 2 Operation ThissectiondescribeshowtooperatetheTPA2015D1EVM. 2.1 Quick Start List for Stand-Alone Operation UsethefollowingstepswhenoperatingtheTPA2015D1EVMasastand-aloneorwhenconnectingthe EVMintoexistingcircuitsorequipment. 2.1.1 PowerandGround 1. EnsuretheexternalpowersourcesaresettoOFF. 2. Setthepowersupplyvoltagebetween2.3Vand5.2V.Whenconnectingthepowersupplytothe EVM,makesuretoattachthegroundconnectiontotheGNDconnectorfirstandthenconnectthe positivesupplytotheVDDconnector.Verifythattheconnectionsaremadetothecorrectbanana jacks. 2.1.2 Audio 1. Ensurethattheaudiosourceissettotheminimumlevel. 2. ConnecttheaudiosourcetotheinputRCAjackIN.Incaseofdifferentialaudioinputensurethatthe jumperJPSEisnotinserted.Incaseofasingle-endedaudioinputensurethatthejumperJPSEis inserted,therebygroundingIN+throughtheinputcapacitorC2. 3. Connectspeakers(8Ωto32 Ω)totheoutputbananajacksOUT+andOUT–. 4. JPOUTallowstheusertoconnectonetheoutputsthroughanRCfilter.Notethattheusermust providethenecessaryresistors,R7andR8. 5. TheunfilteredoutputoftheTPA2015D1canbemeasuredbetweentestpointsTPOUT– andTP OUT+ 2.1.3 AGCControl TheTPA2015D1hasfourselectableinflectionpointsettings:3.35V,3.55V,3.75V,anddisabled. 1. UsejumperAGCshuntedbetweenpins1and2toselectthe3.35Vinflectionpoint(AGC1). 2. UsejumperAGCshuntedbetweenpins3and4toselectthe3.55Vinflectionpoint(AGC2). 3. UsejumperAGCshuntedbetweenpins5and6toselectthe3.75Vinflectionpoint(AGC3). 4. RemovethejumperAGCtodisabletheinflectionpoint(batterytrack)feature.NotethattheAGCstill worksatalimiterlevelof6.15V. 2.1.4 GainControl TheTPA2015D1hasthreegainsettings:6dB,15.5dB,and20dB. 1. UsejumperGAINtosetthegainas6dB,15.5dBor20dB.Toachieve6dB,placethejumper betweenheads1and2;for20dB,shuntheads2and3;for15.5dB,removethejumperandletthe gainpinfloat. 2.1.5 ShutdownControls 1. TheTPA2015D1providesindependentshutdowncontrolsfortheClass-Damplifierandtheboost converter.PinsENBandENDenabletheboostconverterandClass-Damplifier,respectively.They areactivehigh.PressandholdpushbuttonS1toplacetheboostconverterinshutdown.Release pushbuttonS1toactivatetheboostconverter.IfEND=HIGH,theboostconverteronlyturnsonifan audiosignal(>1V )ispresentatoneoftheinputs(IN+orIN-). TheTPA2015D1hasanautopassthroughmode.Undernormaloperation(END=ENB= HIGH),theboostconverterwillautomaticallyturnoffifnoaudiosignalispresentatoneof theinputs(IN+orIN-). 2.2 Boost Settings Thedefaultvoltagefortheboostconverteris5.5Vandcannotbechanged.Ifnoaudiosignalispresent, theboostconverterisautomaticallydisabled.OncetheaudiosignalispresentatIN+andIN-,theboost converterenablesautomatically. 2.2.1 BoostTerms Thefollowingisalistoftermsanddefinitions: C MinimumboostcapacitancerequiredforagivenripplevoltageonPVOUT(PVDD). MIN L Boostinductor f Switchingfrequencyoftheboostconverter. boost I CurrentpulledbytheClass-Damplifierfromtheboostconverter. PVDD IPVDD CurrentpulledbytheClass-Damplifierfromtheboostconverter. L ΔV RipplevoltageonPVOUT(PVDD)duetocapacitance. 2.2.2 ChangingtheBoostInductor Workinginductancedecreasesasinductorcurrentincreases.Ifthedropinworkinginductanceissevere enough,itmaycausetheboostconvertertobecomeunstable,orcausetheTPA2015D1toreachits currentlimitataloweroutputpowerthanexpected.Inductorvendorsspecifycurrentsatwhichinductor valuesdecreasebyaspecificpercentage.Thiscanvaryby10%to35%.Inductanceisalsoaffectedbydc currentandtemperature. Inductorcurrentratingisdeterminedbytherequirementsoftheload.Theinductanceisdeterminedbytwo factors:theminimumvaluerequiredforstabilityandthemaximumripplecurrentpermittedinthe application. UseEquation1todeterminetherequiredcurrentrating.Equation1showstheapproximaterelationship betweentheaverageinductorcurrent,I ,totheloadcurrent,loadvoltage,andinputvoltage(I , L PVDD PVOUT,andVBAT,respectively.)InsertI ,PVDD,andVBATintoEquation1tosolveforI .The PVDD L inductormustmaintainatleast90%ofitsinitialinductancevalueatthiscurrent. æ PVDD ö IL =IPVDD ´ çèVBAT ´ 0.8÷ø (1) Theminimumworkinginductanceis1.3mH.Alowervaluemaycauseinstability. Selectaninductorwithasmalldcresistance,DCR.DCRreducestheoutputpowerduetothevoltage dropacrosstheinductor. 2.2.3 ChangingtheBoostCapacitor Thevalueoftheboostcapacitorisdeterminedbytheminimumvalueofworkingcapacitancerequiredfor stabilityandthemaximumvoltagerippleallowedonPVOUTintheapplication.Theminimumvalueof workingcapacitanceis4.7mF.Donotuseanycomponentwithaworkingcapacitancelessthan4.7 mF.
